Identifying the level of hair loss condition is a significant point for those who would like to have hair restoration treatments. Every people who experience hair loss would know about the time this condition had started approximately; but do you know in which stage your baldness is now? Dr. James Hamilton-Norwood invented a scale to measure this. The Norwood Scale is a scale which has 7 stages used for expressing the level of baldness; although hair transplant specialists may have their own ways to identify the level of your baldness, this scale is very commonly used as a measure.
There are 7 levels in this scale; in some stages the hair loss can be seen as Class A pattern or regular pattern. Class A shows that the receding hairline has a deeper curve but there are hair loss occurring at the top of the head. As the number get higher, hair loss level gets higher as well.
Stage 1
At this point your hair loss condition is called “control stage” which means there is no clue for your hair loss. It is sometimes possible for people to stay in this stage for the rest of their lives, but then again, it is not very likely.
Stage 2
This stage shows the early little signs of hair loss condition; hair loss in the temples can be experienced however not in the vertex yet.
Stage 3
This is the stage where the hair loss becomes a problem for many. The hair loss at the temples progresses. In class A of stage 3, hair loss is more in the temple areas as in normal pattern of the stage a little bald spot may appear in the vertex.
Stage 4
Stage 4 applies to a distinctly noticeable stage of hair loss. The hairline is further retracted and has a deeper curve. The bald patch on the top of the scalp rises, but there is still a hairy area between the crown and the front scalp. In stage 4 class A type, the hairline curve is deeper and there are no balding on the vertex.
Stage 5
The hair loss condition is obviously visible and more progressed than the stage 4; the hairy area in between the crown and frontal area is a thin line with more receding of the hairline and increasing on the balding spot at the vertex. Class A of stage 5 refers to an even deeper curve of the hairline.
Stage 6
In stage 6, the thin line of hairy area is completely gone and the balding of the frontal scalp and the vertex are joined together. Usually only hairy parts left on the scalp are sides at this stage.
Stage 7
Last stage of Norwood Scale refers to the hair loss also in the sides; the frontal and vertex areas are bald and sides are usually very thin in this stage.
